In last week’s
lecture, we have discussed and taught about nonverbal behaviors such as
physical appearance proxemics, kinesics, paralanguage, and haptics, CMC
(Computer Mediated Communication), and history of computer. CMC, which is any
human communication achieved through, or with the help of technology gives not
only many advantages, but also disadvantages. I’ve always interested in the
ways of communication differ for many people. Some might want to communicate
with others face-to-face, but others might want to do it online. I was writing about many negative
consequences of using social networking services, however, I have changed my
mind to write about what we have worked with in today’s lab.
I was supposed to
list all the communication technologies I have owned in my life, and I was very
surprised that I have had so many cellphones during last 7 years. Lifespans for my owned phones were decreasing.
I have using Apple’s iPhone all the time, since the “smartphones” came
out to my world. It was very new and fascinating back in 2009. It has just been
7 years, but changed so much in many ways. Switching my phone to a newer
product due to chasing the trend is secondary for me. The design keep changed
and look more fashionable, so many people want to get a new one. However, the
primary reason for me was, that every time the new iPhone comes out, I felt
like my old phone is so outdated that it does not work properly and gets slow.
I had no idea if it is actually a trick of the trade or it is just my mind long for the
new phone. So I took this chance to look up the reason online for the blog
assignment. By the way, I will not be able to make this funny and interesting
since English is my second language. Sorry about it!
So, I looked up some stupid evil tricks that Apple
uses to make customers to purchase or upgrade to the new phones (no offense
though, it might not be just for Apple but any other companies, but I’ve never
used a smartphone from others). The references for the articles are on the end
of the page. The first webpage that I listed talks about the psychological
reasons behind why your old phone feels slower when a new one comes out.
However, what I found most interesting was explained in other references.
According to the side-by-side tests have shown that new software makes older
devices to perform more slowly to make users to get newer models. It is
actually proven that older devices with new software are more likely to be
turned on later than newer devices, and to be ridiculous when it comes to
switching apps. I have also put the webpage of a video, which examines all
generations for iPhone. This video shows that older devices are not working as
before.
Lastly, what I have thought is that this commercialism
will definitely lead to serious environmental problems due to the e-waste. It
is not bad to have a newer device and enjoy your life, however, we definitely need
better solutions for e-waste.
