#HashtagActivism #hashtivism

Throughout the semester in this class, I have enjoyed most of the topics since Im a very “CMC” person. Among all those topics, hashtag activismor hashtavism was one of the most interesting. By the definition of Wikipedia, Definition of Hashtag Activism, Hashtag activism is a term coined by media outlets which refers to the use of Twitter's hashtags for Internet activism. Not only Twitter, but also most of social networking services such as Facebook and Instagram started to use hashtags.(#)
What came up to my mind first but definitely not least was “Ice Bucket Challenge.Ice Bucket Challenge is basically one of the most influential hashtag activism.
In this article, Ice bucket challenge: More than just "hashtag activism"?, the author suggests that ice bucket challenge was definitely more than just hashtag activism, because of the popularity and participation. This campaign was started to get donations to help patients who are struggling with Lou Gehrig’s disease. It was wide spread all around the world. Even in Asia, it became a very significant and charitable campaign. It’s basically nominating people to be doused with ice water “for the sake of raising money for research into that specific disease or else they will have to donate some money. Like the picture below, even Bill Gates accepted the challenge saying that it’s better to participate. Many of celebrities also participated in this challenge, which led other people to try out the challenge by nominating them.
However, what I really think it’s important is people’s honesty and responsibility. I was also nominated for this challenge, but I could not participate because of my part-time job. Anyways, Hashtag activism is such a powerful revolution that makes people easily be the part of something and great way to stop wrong social issues. So we should keep up the good work with good wills of this activism!

Blog post #4 – Catfishing
Have you ever catfished online? A catfish is someone who pretends to be someone they’re not using Facebook or social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances, according to Urban Dictionary. I find it very interesting since it is related to a Korean drama “She was pretty.” Being a sophomore in a college, I have realized that friendship in college doesn’t do any good in my life and it just makes me so stressed. I had such hard time getting over my stresses about getting along with people here; however, this drama saved my life and helped me to get through the semester. It was very fun and “exciting” to watch the whole episodes. It might be a little off topic because the “catfishing” is happening in FTF communication and it was not for intended purpose of catfishing (pursuing deceptive online romances.) But still, I thought this might be fun to write.

First Impression of She Was Pretty, in this article, the author gives a brief summary of the drama. This drama is a story about a girl who is insecure about herself, her first love, and her best friend. The main character Hye Jin, she was very pretty when she was young so that everyone liked her and stuff. And her first love was the man named Sung Joon, who was very chubby and not very outgoing when he was young. Sung Joon went to America to study. They kept in touch for a while by a mail, but for some reason, they didn't contact at all for like 10 years. Hye Jin was very pretty like I said above, but she became ugly; however, Sung Joon became so hot in 10 years.
One day, Hye Jin got an email from Sung Joon, saying he is coming back to Korea for his job. She was so happy about she's meeting her first love in forever. On the day they were supposed to meet at the park, HJ saw SJ first and she suddenly realized that she has changed too much and afraid of him looking her in a weird look. So HJ asked her best friend Hari, who is a definitely hottie. Hari fell in love with Sung Joon, and she kept acting like she is Hye Jin even though she knows that she should not do that to her best friend.
Hari's deception kept going on and ended up disclosed (not self-disclosure) by him and he got so mad about it. So my point is that there are definitely a lot of people deceive people either online or offline, trying to be someone who is not actually they are or even who doesn't exist for many bad reasons. We should stop the deception that is totally abused!

Blog post #3
In today’s lab, we watched the movie about online dating. It was very interesting to know what people, who use online dating services, actually think about those services and how was the dating processes. Like was it awkward or fun? I first of all thought online dating would ONLY cause negative consequences, since online dating programs have a lot of possibilities of being misused, however, there were so much more successful cases than what I thought.
In the movie, the woman who showed up first in the movie was very impressive. She got married to her husband who is from Prague, Czech Republic where is so far away from U.S. They chatted online for months (while he was not even good at English) and didn’t even get to meet each other in person. However, one day she visited him in Prague, they got married. And the second man who appeared in the movie, he was gay. I totally understand and agree with him using Internet to find his partner, because he said he was so afraid to come out of the closet and find a man. The last man in the movie, he was fat and very short. He was not confident at all, so he was not confident to find a partner in a real life. He said the online dating websites are “where looks don’t matter, but you fall in love with people’s minds.” It really touched me and put aside my prejudiced feelings on dating online.
Since I started to understand people who date online, I looked up for actual reasons how the websites work. In this article, How to make online dating work, the authors said there is much filtering so that people can meet whom they want (height, looks, etc.) But also, there are a lot of (or too much) options. It’s like choosing what to eat at the huge buffet. After reading this article, I came up with the story of one of my best friends. He one day came up to me saying that “it was very hard to tell you this, but I’m gay. I have to go see somebody who I met on the app right now, because he is my ideal man!” I was so shocked, because we have been friends for more than 5 years never recognizing it and I didn’t even know there is that kind of app on the phone. Anyways, my friend got to know somebody who looks exactly like he has dreamed of. I really think online dating will work very appropriately for homosexuals.
I also found this post very interesting: Gay french man. In this, a man, who is looking for “love” not just “sex” is asking for advices. He tried to meet many people, but didn’t work well for him, so he has turned to online dating. He’s saying that people on online dating apps just look for sex, but not romantic relationships. This is the part that I have worried about online dating. People could be sexually abused, raped, and anything that they do not want to be happened. After I read this, I also read some comments on this post. And someone said he met his partner on Gaydar, and he got married and lived together for 12 years, emphasizing there is definitely chances so don’t give up.
I really had no idea how many people try to date online and why do they  do it, however, after watching the movie in class and searching for some reasons, pros and cons really helped me to understand and look further!
